Who you are actually dealing with

Growers in Far North Queensland buy from people, not from brands. Here is who is behind it.

Directors

The two who run it

Peter Topperwien, Chief Executive Officer of The Black Stuff

Peter Topperwien — CEO

A lawyer of over 40 years turned farmer and soil advocate.

He has been working on this deposit since 2004 — proving up the resource, developing the product, and running the trials. Twenty-two years on the same ground.

Alex Hopkins, Chief Financial Officer

Alex Hopkins — CFO

A chartered accountant and auditor with over fifty years in practice, and principal of several accounting firms including Hopkins Accounting and Mannions Business Services.

Alex has more than twenty years farming on the Atherton Tablelands and lives in Cairns. If you want to talk about what an input costs against what a block returns, he has done it on his own country.

Operations

Getting it out of the ground and onto your block

Excavator loading humate into a truck

Russell Howlett — Howlett Plant Hire

Russell and his crew handle sourcing and processing. Decades of local experience, and the machinery to match — excavators, trucks and screening equipment.

That local knowledge matters more than it sounds. Working a wet tropics site through a season with three metres of rain is not the same job as working a dry one, and the people who do it well are the ones who have done it here.

How the product is made

The Black Stuff is sourced and processed by screening, blending and bagging. Nothing else happens to it.

No alkali extraction. No chemical activation. No additives at any stage.

Specialists

Who else we work with

A small operation with the right people on call rather than a large one with everything in-house.

Environmental

ecological — flora mapping of the mine site, and variations to environmental controls for pump drilling trials.

Sustainable Solutions — fauna and flora survey and mapping, and whole-of-government consultation.

Core drilling rig at the Krakatoa deposit

Geology and engineering

Fifty years of core drilling and mapping on the site, from Kershaw in 1976 through Monash, James Cook and commercial drillers to Drill North in 2020.

SRK for complex mine engineering and design.

Finance

David Hartley, Hartley Financial — director and senior financial adviser, and a long-standing contributor to the direction and growth of the business.

Ring us

If you want to talk about your block, talk to Alex or Peter. That is the advantage of a small operation.
