The same material, at a domestic scale. This is where most people meet it first — a 10 litre pail, a garden bed, and somewhere to see for yourself what it does.
Garden beds, pots and lawns fail for the same reasons a block does: the soil will not hold water long enough, and it will not hold what you put on it. Sandy beds dry out between waterings. Compacted lawns shed water instead of taking it in.
The Black Stuff binds fine particles into crumbs, lifts water-holding capacity, and keeps soluble nutrient in the root zone instead of letting it drain past. It also feeds soil biology, which is what turns dirt into something that grows things.
It is acidic, at about pH 4.5, and it must never be applied directly onto plants. Work it into the soil and cover it.
Supplied moist, it generates no dust. If it dries out it makes a fine dust and the handling precautions in the Safety Data Sheet apply.

Rates below are from the Quick Reference. For pasture and turf the rate is the same 3–5 m³/ha the tree crops use — the scale changes, the material does not.
